Israel-Gaza Ceasefire at Risk Amid Hostage Release Delay

February 11, 2025: The Israel-Gaza ceasefire is at risk following a decision by Hamas to delay the release of Israeli hostages, citing multiple violations of the agreement by Israel. Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida stated that Israeli actions, including continued military strikes, restrictions on aid deliveries, and delays in allowing displaced Palestinians to return home, have undermined the ceasefire terms.

Under the current agreement, Hamas has released 21 of the 33 captives it committed to free, while Israel has released over 730 Palestinian prisoners. In return, Israel was expected to withdraw troops from occupied areas, facilitate humanitarian aid, and allow civilians to return to northern Gaza. However, reports indicate that only 8,500 aid trucks have entered Gaza instead of the agreed 12,000, and the delivery of essential shelter and medical evacuations has been significantly delayed.

Hamas announced it would halt further hostage releases unless Israel fully complies with the agreement. The group stressed that it intentionally made this decision five days before the next scheduled release to give international mediators time to intervene. Meanwhile, Israel has accused Hamas of violating the deal, pointing to a previous delay in releasing a female civilian hostage.

The situation has caused deep divisions within Israel. Families of the hostages have protested, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu take immediate action. Far-right political figures, including former National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, have called for intensified military operations in Gaza.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has added to the tensions by suggesting that Israel should abandon the ceasefire if Hamas does not release all captives by Saturday. His remarks, which include proposals for the expulsion of Gaza’s residents, contradict the agreed ceasefire framework and have further inflamed concerns about the region’s stability.

In Gaza, the situation remains dire. Essential supplies are scarce, and the lack of proper shelter amid winter conditions has left many vulnerable. With hostilities potentially resuming, the humanitarian crisis is deepening, and diplomatic efforts face an urgent test to prevent a total collapse of the ceasefire.
