The Digital Doctor is In: AI and Telemedicine Redefine Healthcare
The healthcare industry is undergoing a seismic shift fueled by artificial intelligence (AI) and telemedicine.
February 25, 2025: Germany’s new leadership is pushing for greater European strategic independence, causing tensions in its relationship with the United States. The shift reflects a broader movement within Europe to reduce reliance on Washington for security and economic policy, particularly amid changing global power dynamics.
Chancellor has emphasized the need for Europe to develop a more autonomous defense strategy, arguing that the European Union should take greater responsibility for its security rather than depending on NATO’s U.S.-led framework. This stance aligns with growing concerns within the EU that Washington’s priorities, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, could reduce American focus on European security.
Berlin also advocates for stronger European economic sovereignty, particularly in energy, technology, and trade. The government has been vocal about reducing reliance on US tech giants and strengthening the EU’s capacity in semiconductor production, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. Additionally, Germany has taken steps toward reducing its dependency on US financial systems by supporting expanding the euro’s global role and exploring alternative payment infrastructures that limit exposure to American sanctions policies.
These policies have created friction with Washington. US officials argue that a more independent Europe should not come at the expense of transatlantic cooperation. Washington has expressed concerns that European defense initiatives could undermine NATO rather than complement it. Meanwhile, American businesses have pushed back against EU regulations that they see as protectionist, particularly in the tech and energy sectors.
The push for independence also comes amid broader geopolitical shifts. With the US increasingly focused on countering China, some European leaders feel that the continent needs to prepare for a future where American military and economic support cannot be taken for granted. However, skeptics within Europe caution that reducing reliance on the US without having fully developed alternatives could leave the region vulnerable.
Germany’s leadership has framed this strategy as necessary for Europe’s long-term stability. Whether this will strengthen the EU’s global standing or strain transatlantic relations remains an open question.
