General Election Set for July: Sunak vs. Starmer Showdown Begins
March 25, 2025: The UK general election has been scheduled for July, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest between Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer.
March 7, 2023: This week, the senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner, D-Va., said he is introducing a broad bipartisan bill outlining an approach to restricting or prohibiting foreign technology, as the popular video-sharing app known as TikTok.
TikTok is a short-form video platform that more than 100 million Americans use. Data privacy concerns have been swirling all over the app because of its parent firm, ByteDance, privately held in China.
Warner said he works on the bill with Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., which adds that he is concerned more than the type of content Americans see on TikTok.
“They take data from Americans, not keeping it safe, but what issues me more with TikTok is that this can be a tool of Propaganda,” he told “Fox News Sunday.”
The legislation of Warner comes following the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee vote to advance a bill granting President Joe Biden the authority to ban TikTok. The bill passes the Republican-controlled committee 24-16 along party lines, with unanimous GOP help and zero Democratic votes.
But even with the legislation before the committee in the previous week, lawmakers have a long way to go before any absolute ban could be implemented.
Assuming this bill is getting through the Republican-controlled House, the Democratic-majority Senate would have to pass a few versions, which will be a challenge based on the opposition already voiced by some Democrats. If it did pass the Senate, Biden is required to decide whether to veto it or sign it.
TikTok is zero stranger to challenges from U.S. officials, as former President Donald Trump is showing his intention to ban the app by executive action in 2020. Congress refused TikTok from management devices as part of a bipartisan spending bill; several governors are removing the app from state computer networks, including at public universities and Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., which is being included calls for a complete nationwide ban in January.
