A recent earthquake strikes Turkey, demolishing more buildings

February 28, 2023: -On Monday, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake surprised southern Turkey, three weeks after a catastrophic quake destroyed the region.

It has caused some already damaged buildings to collapse and kill at least one person, the country’s disaster management agency, AFAD, said.

Another 69 people were injured due to the earthquake, which was located in the town of Yesilyurt in Malatya province, AFAD’s chief Yunus Sezer stated to the reporters. Over two dozen buildings tumbled.

Yesilyurt’s mayor, Mehmet Cinar, told Haber Turk television that a father and daughter were stuck beneath the fallen building of a four-story building in the city. The pair had entered the broken building to collect all the things that belonged to them.

The search-and-rescue teams in Malatya were sifting through the rubble of two damaged buildings that were on top of a few parked cars, HaberTurk has stated.

Malatya was from the 11 Turkish provinces which were attacked by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that totally destroyed parts of southern Turkey and northern Syria in the first week of February.

That quake led to over 48,000 deaths and demolition of approximately 173,000 buildings in Turkey.

AFAD’s chief insisted people not join damaged buildings saying solid aftershocks continue to pose a risk. Close to 10,000 aftershocks have reached the region affected by the quake, which started on February 6.
